As part of National Apprenticeship week, we caught up with Will who works at our Factory in Kettering as an Apprentice Plumber. He tells us about his experience so far and his plans for the future.
When did you join Prestige?
I joined in 2017 at age 26 to start the Apprenticeship programme.
It’s been great learning about all the different trades but what I’ve taken to the most is Plumbing.
How has your career developed since you joined Prestige?
The skills I’ve learnt here have enabled me to help out friends and family install bathrooms and do odd maintenance jobs around their own homes. I feel a real sense of achievement and motivated to continue working my way up and developing my skills to the best of my ability.
I’d also like to start learning more about renewable energy too so although I specialise in plumbing, I’m also continuing to learn and further my skills in Electrics to future-proof my career.
What’s the best 3 things about working for Prestige?
- I get treated really well here and feel valued.
- I like the pay structure and the Apprenticeship scheme was higher paid than anywhere else I found, meaning that I could join as an older candidate without taking too much of a financial cut.
- Joining Prestige has given me so many different opportunities to specialise in a variety of trades which has given me more flexibility in my career.
Do you have any hobbies or interests outside of work?
I always like to keep busy so I have quite a few different hobbies including drawing, I’m starting to write my own book, I enjoy building things like items of furniture for people and helping out with DIY.
What advice would you give to someone who is looking to get into a trade career?
It’s never too late to change your career. I was a lot older than all the other Apprentice’s, but because of the pay structure, I was able to join and its now really paying off as my opportunities have massively opened up. I now feel confident to work my way up.
